Back in October, millennial-favorite denim retailer Madewell — cool little sis to J.Crew, which it regularly outperforms — made headlines when it launched Madewell Beauty Cabinet, a curated selection of “tried-and-true products…that fall in the sweet spot between low maintenance and treat yourself.”
True to Madewell’s casual-cool #aesthetic, there are no contouring tools, no highlighters designed to give you a donut-like glaze. Available both online and in select stores, the selection includes various all-natural sheer lip and cheek tints, face masks, bath soaks, body oils, velvet-ribbon hair ties and, beginning more recently, French-made perfumes and Madewell-branded candles. (In case you hadn’t noticed, they’re very big on the whole French girl beauty thing.)
Haven’t been keeping up with the Cabinet? We understand. There’s been the holidays, #metoo movement, awards season, fall fashion collections and a certain Kylie Cosmetics founder’s baby news to distract you. That’s why we’re here, alerting you to the fact that Madewell’s beauty section now features aromatherapy, even more Madewell x French Girl stuff and loads of other must-have goodies. Plus a lot of it’s on sale.
Without further ado, shop our current Madewell Beauty Cabinet favorites in the gallery below.
Rose Lip Polish, $15 at Madewell
Around this time of year, everyone's lips are chapped. French Girl's lip polish (made with shea butter, coconut oil, mint and rose geranium essential oils and sugar) will slough away all that dry, rough, flaky skin. Here's what you do: Before bed, wet your lips with water, rub the treatment over them for about 10 seconds, rinse, pat dry and apply a liberal swipe of lip balm.
Hand Refresher, $10 at Madewell
Aside from getting immunized, one of the best ways to fight the flu this season (and stay healthy throughout the year) is to keep a bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer in your bag at all times. This one moonlights as a face toner and breakout treatment, thanks to good-for-your-skin ingredients like aloe, chamomile and calendula and essential oils like lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, geranium and clary sage.
Olio E Osso
Balm No. 3, $28 at Madewell
A favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow, this olive, shea and essential oil-infused lip balm doubles as a natural-looking blush (just pat it on cheekbones and blend out). The brainchild of makeup artist Paola LaMorticella, the citrus-scented balm is made in Portland, in small batches, using minimally processed ingredients. The clear version is also a big multitasker: use it to tame flyaways, condition split ends and moisturize cuticles and dry spots of any kind.
Large Crystalline Half-Moon Pouch, $24.50 at Madewell
Behold: a chic, generously sized, easily cleanable PVC makeup bag that could totally pass for Marc Jacobs or Helmut Lang, if not for its tag.
Bamboo Charcoal Detoxifying Soap Bar, $12 at Madewell
We've plugged this bar soap before. It's one of our favorites. Why? Well, Herbivore Botanicals is the bee's knees. And if you have oily, combination or blemish-prone skin, Japanese bamboo charcoal is your best friend — it's like a magnet for impurities, toxins and oils. Gentle yet effective, this naturally exfoliating bar will give you instantly softer, smoother, clearer skin.
Brighten Pineapple + Gemstone Mask, $48 at Madewell
This face mask is made with skin-resurfacing pineapple and papaya enzymes, skin-smoothing rice powder and illuminating Brazilian tourmaline gemstone. Right before bed, apply a thin layer to your freshly-cleansed face. Leave it on for 20 minutes, rinse with a warm washcloth, hit the hay and wake up looking positively radiant, like you've never had a pore in your life. Like we said, Alex Kummerow and Julia Wills, the husband and wife duo behind Herbivore Botanicals, know their stuff.
Living Luminizer, $30.40 at Madewell
From makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift — who both Miranda Kerr and Gisele Bündchen entrust with their million-dollar faces — a seriously great cream highlighter. Made with raw, organic ingredients like coconut oil and rosemary leaf extract, this will give you a healthy, natural glow. No glazed donut vibes, ever.
Lip2Cheek in Beloved, $28.80 at Madewell
Another RMS Beauty all-star, this pigmented-yet-sheer lip and cheek tint (made with pure, centrifuge-pressed coconut oil) will give you the perfect subtle flush and/or your-lips-but-better rosy pout.
Madewell x French Girl
Lumiere Body Oil, $28.80 at Madewell
Good skin, great hair and loads of insouciant charm are the hallmarks of (stereotypical) Gallic beauty. Madewell — or should we say bien fait — and a brand literally called French Girl recently came together to create a line of exclusive-to-Madewell products that channel that effortless je ne sais quoi. Among them this body oil — a mix of sunflower, argan and coconut oils — which is intensely hydrating, quick-absorbing and smells like lavender, bien sûr.
Madewell x French Girl
Lavender Sea Soak, $14.40 at Madewell
Also from the line, also lavender-scented, here's a fancy, handmade bath soak infused with pink Himalayan sea salt, rosemary oil and other skin-soothing ingredients. Pour it in your bath, watch as the water turns millennial pink, kick back and relax like you're Brigitte Bardot in Don Juan 1973 ou Si Don Juan Etait Une Femme.
Daughter of the Land
Face + Body Oil in Bergamot + Spice, $38.40 at Madewell
Crafted in Brooklyn using organic and fair-trade ingredients, this quick-absorbing face and body oil (a blend of Italian bergamot oil apricot oil, coconut oil and cinnamon leaf oil) is super rich and hydrating. It'll make your skin feel soft and bouncy.
Exfoliating+ Face Mask, $8 at Madewell
Karuna's big selling point is that its masks are made out of 100 percent natural wood-pulp fiber, which allows them to retain more serum than other masks (and biodegrade!). This particular (oil-free) serum features a powerful blend of hyaluronic acid and peptides (to renew), aloe vera and chamomile (to hydrate) and Chinese licorice and vitamin B (to detox). It's a good all-around sheet mask to use on days when you're feeling especially blah about your skin.
Large Tin Candle in Aloe Blossom, $16 at Madewell
There are those of us who, when the days are short and cold and all we feel like doing is cuddling up on our couch with Netflix, fire up a festive, seasonally-scented candle. From Madewell's debut candle collection, this citrus, marine, lily of the valley, rose, violet, amber and musk fragrance is more for the ones who spend the first days of winter dreaming of ocean breezes (and planning their imminent beach getaways).
Eau De Parfum in 301, $48 at Madewell
Ludovic Bonneton's line of small batch, artisanal, unisex, uncomplicated, easily layer-able scents is perfect for those who like to smell good, but avoid the first floor of department stores like the plague. 301, which has notes of sandalwood, amber and cardamom, is a real crowd-pleaser, as is the (currently sold out, wah) 602, which calls to mind pepper, cedar and patchouli.
