A woman parliamentarian in Pakistan decided to wear sari without realising that she will be condemned for her attire.

Nasreen Jalil from MQM faced criticism for her decision to wear sari as a senator from Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) targetted the woman MP with sexist remarks. Senator Mufti Abdul Sattar of the JUI-F told Jalil, who had arrived to chair a Senate’s Functional Committee on Human Rights meeting, that her attire was unbecoming of “a Muslim woman.”

According to a report by Dawn, Sattar lectured Jalil that “able and intellectual” woman like her should have an “appearance like Muslims.” He went on to add that it was mandatory in Islam for women to cover all parts of their body except the face, hands and feet.

“God has raised you to this status, you should become a role model for other women. What message will it send when the footage [of this meeting] is aired on TV?” Sattar added.

This evoked angry reactions from journalists, filmmakers and politicians with some of whom posting the photo of Fatima Jinnah, the younger sister of Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Posting Fatima Jinnah’s archive photo in sari, one user wrote, “If Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah was alive, Same Mullahs would’ve criticized her for wearing Sarhi. (sic)”

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid wrote, “What do you expect from a JUIF senator: and for the record she is a role model!” Parliamentarian Saman Jafri too defended Jalil with her tweet that read, “Sen.Nasreen Jalil IS a role model fr many including myself fr her deceny, intellignce, courage &principled politics! (sic)”

Journalist Murtaza Solangi slammed the maulana for targetting a ’75-year-old’ lady on her choice of dress. He wrote, “Today a Mufti told 75 years old Senator Nasreen Jalil what she could wear as she wore a Saarhi. He was too concerned about parts of her body that were open to his eyes. Why couldn’t he lower his eyes? Are we supposed to wear Arab outfits now?”
