You always want what you can’t have — especially when it comes to beauty products. That’s why we’re getting the inside scoop from your favorite retailers on what’s selling out right now, how to sign up for waitlists, and where to go to find the next best thing. Because if everyone’s buying it, you know it’s got to be good.
getting inked or changing her hair color for the umpteenth time, Kylie Jenner has a dynamic beauty history — one that’s been well-documented on this site. But nothing has caused more of a frenzy than the social media star’s coveted lips — and the shades with which she adorns them. Case in point: Jenner’s sold-out Lip Kit and gloss collections.
When Jenner first launched her line of liquid lipsticks and matching lipliners last November, the entire stock of product sold out immediately, and dozens began to
resurface on eBay for more than 10 times their original price. The online explosion occurred once again when Jenner dropped her trio of glosses last week — they retail for $15 each on her website.
We’re not at all surprised by the popularity of Jenner’s cosmetics debut, not only because of her star power but also because of the
quality of the products. The Lip Kit shades — there are now 11 — are trendy but wearable, and the formula is opaque and long-lasting.
Unfortunately, all of Jenner’s shades are still out of stock, but you can follow
Kylie Cosmetics’ Instagram account to keep tabs on the supply (or hop on her app for first dibs on restock information). If you simply cannot wait to start sporting the hues, however, we’ve gathered a few alternatives that could pass for the real deal. Check ’em out, ahead.
If you were one of the lucky few to get your hands on
Kylie’s products, we applaud you. (And here are some pointers on nabbing sold-out products, straight from the pros.) If not, don’t worry: We’ve scoured the liquid-lipstick, gloss, and pencil markets for some other options that come pretty damn close.
If you like Spice…
This sultry fuchsia is rich enough for winter, but bright enough to stand out in the summer. Plus, the finish looks matte, but never feels like it.
Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick, $21, available at Sephora.
If you like Dead Of Knight…
King Kylie just announced the newest addition to her lineup, and it’s one we definitely didn’t see coming: a
black, metallic liquid lipstick. This MUA Makeup Academy version is the closest dupe we could find (and it’s a good one) to the youngest Jenner’s creation, which goes by the name of Majestic. One point of note: Kylie’s version has blue undertones, so we recommend layering it over this navy-blue lippie to get the color just right.
MUA Luxe Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Twinkle, $5.58, available at MUA.
Being all patriotic and what-not for the Fourth of July, Kylie announced two of her
brightest shades yet, Skylie and Freedom. Skylie looks just like its name, a light, sky-blue hue that apparently matches her Ferrari. If you’re too nervous to drop bills on her shade, take a (cheaper) walk on the wild side with this Nyx dupe.
Nyx Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Little Denim Dress, $6.99, available at Ulta Beauty.
If You Like Kristen…
Kat Von D’s Berlin is a similar warm pink that instantly brightens just about every complexion.
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Berlin, $20, available at Sephora.
If you like Reign…
Turns out Jenner’s rusty-copper lipstick Reign has a doppelgänger (with a similar name): Coloured Raine’s Lip Lacquer in Fame.
Coloured Raine Lip Lacquer in Fame, $17, available at Coloured Raine.
If you like Heir…
Not only are Jouer’s new Lip Crèmes some of our
favorite liquid-lipstick formulas (they last for hours without drying out our lips), but one shade in the lineup — Praline — is an extremely close match to Jenner’s pale pink-gold hue Heir.
Unfortunately, nearly every shade of Jouer’s liquid lipsticks is sold out as well. But according to representatives of the brand, the lippies will be back in stock in mid-May.
Jouer Long-Wear Lip Crème Liquid Lipstick in Praline, $18, available at Jouer Cosmetics.
If you like King K…
Milani’s new collection of metallic liquid lipsticks (which launches May 1) boasts a host of colors that could pass as Jenner hues. This one in particular, Chromatic Addict, is a gorgeous true gold that’s extremely similar to King K.
Milani Amore Mattalics Lip Crème in Chromatic Addict, $8.99, available on May 1 at Milani Cosmetics.
If you like Literally…
Nyx Cosmetics’ Xtreme Lip Cream packs one helluva punch where pigmentation is concerned. Plus, the shade Skin Tone (a warm brown-beige) is a close match to Jenner’s Literally and will
literally only set you back $3.
Nyx Cosmetics Xtreme Lip Cream in Skin Tone, $6 $3, available at Nyx Cosmetics.
If you like So Cute…
Rimmel’s Show Off Lip Lacquers have the color payoff of liquid lipstick, but the smooth, shiny finish of gloss. This shade, Nude Eclipse, is extremely similar to Jenner’s warm, nude offering So Cute.
Rimmel London Show Off Lip Lacquer in Nude Eclipse, $4.99, available at Walgreens.
If you like Kourt K…
Jenner created Kourt K because her millions of fans requested a deep purple hue. The shade launched last week and — you guessed it —sold out. For those of you who didn’t score one (let’s be real, who did?), this shade by MAC has a very similar vibe, especially when layered over a matching lip liner like
Rimmel London Exaggerate Lip Liner in Obsession.
MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Oh, Lady, $20, available at MAC.
If you like 22…
We’re used to seeing Jenner sporting deep brown and nude shades, so when she launched 22 (a vibrant burnt orange) last month, we were happily surprised. For those of you looking to don a similar hue, Ofra’s Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Surfers Paradise is a near perfect match for Jenner’s own lipstick. Although the whipped texture of Ofra’s version makes it super easy to apply, layering
Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Liner Vintage Coral on top will help you achieve even cleaner lines.
Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Surfers Paradise, $19.90, available at Ofra Cosmetics.
If You Like Candy K…
Anastasia Soare, founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills, has already conquered the brow and contouring worlds, so it’s only natural that she set her sights on lipsticks. The brand’s Pure Hollywood liquid lipstick is a dead ringer for Jenner’s lipstick in Candy K (a tawny pink) — and the finish is just as opaque and matte. Looking for a lipliner to match? Try
Sephora’s Lip Liner To Go in Pink Beige.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Pure Hollywood, $20, available at Macy’s.
If You Like Dolce K…
Kylie Jenner herself is a fan of
Colourpop’s liquid lipsticks. The brand has a range of shades that fall in line with Jenner’s aesthetic — and this one in particular is nearly identical to Dolce K. Layer it over a lipliner (like Nyx Cosmetic’s Waterproof Color Lip Liner in Sugar Glass) for a budge-proof, brown-toned neutral that complements just about any makeup look.
Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Beeper, $6, available at Colourpop.
If You Like True Brown K…
Jenner don brown lipstick on countless occasions, we were very excited to see that she created a chocolate shade of her own. Dose Of Color’s Chocolate Wasted liquid lipstick provides a similar effect: deep, chocolatey color and a super-matte finish that doesn’t crack or flake off after a few hours of wear. Pair this with Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Lip in Chocolate Brown, and you’ll be ready to rock this ’90s trend far into 2016.
Dose Of Colors Chocolate Wasted Liquid Lipstick, $18, available at Dose Of Colors.
If You Like Posie K…
If You Like Posie K
This shade was the first of Jenner’s
Valentine’s Collection to be announced to the public. Jenner held a contest on her Kylie Cosmetics Instagram account asking fans to help her name the lipstick. Sadly, the names we threw into the hat — “Mmm k” and “K” — were not chosen, and Jenner ultimately chose “Posie K” (which we will admit is pretty fitting). Nyx Cosmetic’s Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague is a comparable (albeit slightly brighter) shade, as is Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat in Crazy In Love.
Nyx Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague, $5.99, available at Ulta.
If You Like Koko K…
Although Maybelline’s liquid lipsticks aren’t quite as matte as Jenner’s, this shade, Nude Thrill, paired with
Tarte’s Tarteist Lip Crayon in Boho creates a creamy, pinky-nude combination that’s perfect for daily wear.
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Nude Thrill, $6.39, available at Drugstore.com.
If You Like Mary Jo K…
Jenner’s Mary Jo K, which she
named after her grandmother, is a classic bright red that really rounds out the collection (everyone needs a go-to red lippie, right?). Sephora’s Cream Lip Stain in Always Red is a near perfect match for Jenner’s hue. Plus, the formula stays opaque and even (read: not patchy) all day. For super-clean lines, we suggest lining your lips with Gwen Stefani’s classic red lipliner from Urban Decay) before applying the liquid lipstick over top.
Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red, $14, available at Sephora.
